Good News/Dyeing, Part One

It’s strangely quiet here tonight. The boys are asleep and for once I don’t have the radio on. A few cars driving by, that’s it. So different from our loud, loud days of late. Giggles from Spinner, his first real baby laughs that are so sweet to hear. A constant stream of facts from Little Man: the habitat of squirrels, black bear food, Venus and Mars…he is a constant fountain of information lately. And then there is this dear child:
Sept-Nov 2008 057

Caught in a moment of quiet here (it lasted about 5 minutes) my dear Knittykid is, well, in that very rough transition stage. Ending up year two, getting ready for year three. It’s huge, and hard, and made even harder by the addition of a new little brother and a favorite big brother who has to go off to school every day. We spend our days glued together (he is sleeping next to me as I type) and I must hear, “Mama, I want you!” at least 50 times a day. That, and the meltdowns about paint and fudge and  not being able to eat in the living room. But wow, is he sweet, so sweet. And when he says things like, “I’m so excited to be having Christmas!” as we get ready to set up the tree, my heart totally melts and it makes up for the screaming about paint from earlier this morning.

I’m excited to share a good report on Knittykid. He had his annual visit with the cardiologist yesterday regarding his coarctation of the aorta. If you’ve been reading awhile, you’ll remember that we discovered this defect when he was two months old, and were told that heart surgery was imminent and to prepare to have it done within the next year. Terrifying, absolutely terrifying to think that they would be cutting into my baby’s heart. But as we had tests done and doctors conversed about his case, we were told it was a minor coarc, that we could wait and see for awhile, which we’ve been doing for the past two and three quarter years.

So the good news now? His coarc is staying minor, his aorta has not gotten any more pinched and his heart and blood pressure are great. So great that his doctor is thinking he may never need surgery. No promises, of course as things could change. But for now, it looks really, really good. Needless to say, we are thrilled!!

So the dyeing? Well, this Christmas I’m trying to keep my gift making simple and inexpensive. But I also want to do some stuff with the boys. Enter iDye and Dharma Trading Company’s great deals on t-shirts and silks.

I-dye

Freezer paper stencils and playsilks. That’s where it’s at this year for us. (And knitting. There is also secret knitting!)

I am in love with the iDye. It works brilliantly and is so easy. Toss in the washer with some salt. Dry. You’re done. I dyed a bunch of new shirts for gifts and I also dragged out all of our older, stained and worn looking shirts. They look brand new! The only odd thing was that while the cotton shirts came out nice and bright, the silks came out more pastel-looking.

Here’s the scarlet and kelly green on the silks:

playsilks

I wanted them brighter for my nephew but I was out of dye. What next? Koolaid, of course!!

One pack per silk, one cup water, microwave 2 minutes, (watch carefully!) cool, and rinse.

playsilks

The green turned out great. The red is still not to my liking. I might try kool-aid round two.I’ll have the finished gifts up in a few more days, if certain small people choose to cooperate!

Be still my heart….

Little Man is knitting.

Sept-Nov 2008 011

This happened so suddenly, and I think it is a good testament to how quickly growth can happen.

Previous attempts have always gone exactly the same:

1. “Mom, I want to knit!”

2. I get some bulky needles, bulky yarn. We cuddle up, I teach him how to hold, the little rhyme we say, we start, taking baby steps.

3. He’s all thumbs (aren’t we all?) but really all thumbs. The whole two needles + yarn is completely throwing him off. Frustration ensues.

4. “Mom? I don’t want to knit.”

5. End of lesson.

We had a little session like this just last month. So when we went to the yarn store with a friend and her daughter last weekend to buy new yarn for my friend (a newbie knitter) and needles and yarn for her seven year old daughter, I was hesitant when Little Man asked for the same kid’s beginning kitty needles that his friend was getting. He was persistent, I gave in.

Somehow in the last few weeks something changed. He got it, got it well enough that after three rows with my help he was knitting on his own.
Sept-Nov 2008 009

He’s knit a row a two a day since then, and it seems to be sticking. He loves it when we knit together. Whether or not he grows up to be fiber obsessed, an occasional knitter, or a boy who thinks knitting is dorky remains to be seen. Regardless, at least I can say “I taught my son to knit.”

Grey…

The Minnesota greyness has settled in for November.

We awoke to snow yesterday. The sun wasn’t even up all the way and the boys were bundled up and outside.
Sept-Nov 2008 089

Sept-Nov 2008 094

Today we have rain, wet leaves, and more grey. The greyness really doesn’t get to me until late in the winter when I really start craving sunny days and spring flowers. Until then I enjoy it. The grey feels cozy and warm, perfect for tea and sweaters.

It does make it hard to take a good knitting picture.

Blocking. (On an ugly green towel!)
Sept-Nov 2008 095

More blocking, with the close up of the area that Knittykid ripped out, I picked up and hoped it would block out evenly. It’s not.
Sept-Nov 2008 096

I’ll post more on these projects when I do have a good sunny day and can get some nice finished shots. In the meantime I’m off to make some cornbread and chili for the boys and their uncle and aunt tonight. The Skeptic (and Spinner) and I are out for our anniversary. (Which was two weeks ago and under so much baby brain fog I completely forgot to post about it.)

Halloween recap and a sweater

Happy Election Day everyone!!!!

So Halloween was fun if not a bit frantic, in a busy sort of way. We always carve pumpkins on Halloween, but this along with the excitement of trick-or-treating makes for some serious craziness.
We did get the pumpkins carved:

I completed my worst sewing project ever:
Sept-Nov 2008 054
(I think this is the worst picture I’ve ever taken too.)

My mastitis came back this week so my plans for a super-cool Robin hood hat turned into this:
1. Wrap green felt around Little Man’s head and trim.
2. Blanket stitch around top.
3. Run out of thread, oh well, it’s close enough.
4. Give to five year old who still thinks it’s the best hat ever.

We carved, had pizza and trick-or-treated down the block. I realized we are the stingiest candy givers on the block. My neighbors literally give handfuls out!! Which means that even though they only went to seven houses the boys had a huge pile of sugar, yikes!!

I finally had a nice sunny morning to take pictures of Spinner in his gorgeous sweater made by my friend Joyce from my knitting group.

Look at that chin!!

Sept-Nov 2008 007

Hopefully he’ll be in a good enough mood to finally go to knitting tonight so she can see him wear it in person. I really want to get there too, I’ll need to chill out a bit before an evening of election results. I can’t believe how nervous I am about this one. I just hope I can stay up late enough to know the results.

Go Barack, go!!!!

I have decided…

I will not be knitting any more Baby Surprise Jackets in fingering weight yarn. I don’t care how cute they are, babies grow too darn fast. Luckily however, he’s got lots of room left in his longies!!

Our tiny guy hit four weeks yesterday, which I can hardly believe. As all newborns do, he’s growing and changing so incredibly fast. He’s more solid now, that newborn floppiness is starting to go away and he’s turning into a sturdy little baby.

So four weeks, it’s time for a blog name for our new baby boy. I’ve struggled with this one, as I’m not the most creative in the nickname department. But his birth made me think of one. A couple of hours before he was born, he did this crazy twisty/spinning thing as he moved down the birth canal. (I’m still amazed at how aware I was during his birth!) This made me think of Spinning Babies, a web site run by a wonderful local midwife.  So, hmmmmm….spinning babies, a spinning mama….let’s call him Spinner! So Spinner it will be!!!

Lessons

Lesson #1: Say Yes.

I think as parents, one of the most difficult challenges is to be able to let our children go to be able to be free thinkers, lifelong learners, creative people.  It’s so easy to want to stick to our own vision, the vision that means a clean house and kids who quietly play something, well…easy to clean up and non eventful so we can just make dinner in peace.

So when Little Man came to us desperate to do some sort of experiment with pipe cleaners and a bucket of bubbles, we both argued with him for ten minutes as to why he couldn’t: “too close to supper, how on earth will that work, too messy, I’m trying to cook, etc.” But’s he’s stubborn, and he was quite certain that this would be the best thing ever and we realized it was easier to just give him a little bucket of bubbles and let him go to it.

And you know what? He totally showed us because it DID work, it was lovely and he and Knittykid sat outside happy as can be for the next 15 minutes. Say Yes.

Lesson #2: It still will be messy

Of course, when they were done, no one sweetly carried the bucket up to us and asked us to pour the leftover bubbles back into the container. Nope, not at all. They poured it on their heads.

5.30 011

5.30 005

I wish I had gotten to the camera in time to get a picture of the bubbles before they went on their heads. You can see Little Man’s pipe cleaner creation. He dipped it in the bucket, held it up into the wind, and they got huge, gorgeous bubbles that set Knittykid into a fit of delight.

5.30 008

Messy? Yup?

Was dinner late? Yup.

Totally worth it anyway? Yup. And we didn’t even have to do shampoos that night.

Thanks Little Man!

Happy Birthday Little Man!!!

It was five years ago today that this dark-haired, beautiful little boy emerged into this world.

FIVE.

It seems like just yesterday that he was a tiny two year old. A few of my friends’ children turned five that summer and I remember thinking what a huge turning point that was. Five meant kindergarten, that first real step out into the world, and it seemed so far away at the time. Now here I am with another two year old and my oldest is turning five. He’s not so little anymore…

DSC03221

I am constantly amazed by my firstborn. His joy, curiosity and enthusiasm are contagious. His amazing stories, observations, wonderings and constant chatter mean I never have a moment to not have something to think about. Just now, as he’s sitting next to me on the floor putting his legos together, he blurted out to me, “Mom? Isn’t it funny how some people think it’s morning time, when it’s really night time?” This is what I love about five, because I know there is a story in there somewhere that will come out any minute. I wish I was better at remembering to write them down.

So today I wish the happiest birthday to my own dear Little Man. Thank you for five amazing and happy years. I can’t wait to see what this next year brings to you!

I Have a Secret

So I’ve been keeping a secret from all of you. A big secret. A secret that will explain the sloppy knitting, the lack of knitting, the fewer and fewer blog posts, my inability to even manage to comment on all the blogs I barely can manage to keep up with these days…

“What secret?” you all ask. “What could possibly keep a person from knitting?!”

I’ll give you a hint.

Picture 002

I inherited these vintage patterns from the Skeptic’s great aunt. Got any ideas yet?

Still not sure? Here’s another….

Picture 001

Okay, maybe this one will really clue you in….

13 weeks

Got it now? If you guessed that there will be a new addition to our family, you are right!! 🙂 Exciting news for us,  baby number three is on his/her way!!!

This has been the most brutal first trimester I’ve ever been through. Sick to my stomach 24 hours a day and exhausted (two little boys have helped with that.) Seriously, picking up knitting needles was too much work, they seemed so darn heavy. Plus I pretty much fell asleep with the boys each night and there was no waking me up. The last two weeks I’ve started to feel more like myself and I actually should have some FO’s to show off soon, or at least some WIP’s.

I love the second trimester, it’s the time to get stuff done and have some energy to do it. Of course, my list is laughable, it’s so long, and I know completely impossible. But dreaming about baby knitting? So gratifying!

Happy Birthday Knittybaby!!

Are you all ready for this? My baby turns two, yes TWO today!!!

Picture 008

I’m constantly amazed lately that this tiny little boy is now really, truly a little boy. A little boy who can climb, jump, wrestle, dance, talk, sing, color, and even sass his mama or give his big brother a smack. He is an amazing blessing, and is truly the most joyful, happy little person to be around.

Messed Up Wheel

I love this age, despite the “It’s mine!” and the “I want that!” that I hear twenty times a day, there is something very special about this transition to two. It’s that absolute cuteness in everything they say, or try to say; that realization that they can really communicate with you, even when you can’t always figure out what they are saying. (“Cresens, cresens, I want cresens!!!!” Lord, I wish I knew what that meant.) The things they say are so, so funny and so incredibly sweet. I wish I could hold on to these first sentences forever.

This birthday of course, this little baby turning into a little boy right before my eyes, brings into question the longevity of his nickname. When he was born he was this tiny little guy who would of course, be a baby forever, right? If I was Knittymama, well, he should be Knittybaby, it just fit. But now I’m wondering how much longer until it’s time to move him up to a more “big boy” nickname, but I just can’t think of one that seems to fit him perfectly. Any ideas?

This birthday also opens up contest time here at Knittymama. We’ve got four birthdays coming up in the next four weeks, so it’s time to celebrate!!! I’ll announce the contest on Monday sometime. I’ll also have another big surprise coming midweek.

For everyone that is celebrating Easter this weekend, I hope it is a blessed and happy one for you and that it truly feels like spring. Personally, I’m just hoping that we’re not going to an Easter egg hunt on Saturday in 6 inches of snow. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

When it’s clean,

Picture 011

and sunny,

my workroom is my favorite place…

Picture 012

It’ cozy, has a great view,

Picture 015

and places for my favorite little people to come inside and do their own projects.

Picture 018

Picture 017

Sometimes, they get their projects mixed up with mine.

Picture 006

But it all seems to work out in the end.

Miss Babs merino/silk

It took me a long time to get this place back into a somewhat manageable space. After Christmas it was such a mess I could barely stand to go in there. But spring is my favorite time of year to get things organized and put together, and as of today, it still looks pretty tidy and workable up there.

Weekends are always an interesting blend of the boys coming up and down all afternoon. The Skeptic has his shop in the basement and I’m on the second floor. I’d love for us to have work spaces together, but wood and electronics just don’t mix well with fiber and fabric.

The boys pop in and out all day. Sometimes the Skeptic takes them out for awhile so I can work in peace, sometimes I take them out for awhile so he can work in peace. In the end everyone gets some family time together and some Mommy or Daddy time alone. And it’s funny, as much as I love my quiet time, I also love hearing the car door slam, looking out the window and seeing the boys trot up to the back door with Dad.

I feel so lucky to have a space like this right now. On a gloomy, busy Tuesday it’s a nice thought to look forward too, especially now that I know there will be more days to open up the windows, sit in the sun and work.
