Happy Birthday Little Man!!!

It was five years ago today that this dark-haired, beautiful little boy emerged into this world.

FIVE.

It seems like just yesterday that he was a tiny two year old. A few of my friends’ children turned five that summer and I remember thinking what a huge turning point that was. Five meant kindergarten, that first real step out into the world, and it seemed so far away at the time. Now here I am with another two year old and my oldest is turning five. He’s not so little anymore…

I am constantly amazed by my firstborn. His joy, curiosity and enthusiasm are contagious. His amazing stories, observations, wonderings and constant chatter mean I never have a moment to not have something to think about. Just now, as he’s sitting next to me on the floor putting his legos together, he blurted out to me, “Mom? Isn’t it funny how some people think it’s morning time, when it’s really night time?” This is what I love about five, because I know there is a story in there somewhere that will come out any minute. I wish I was better at remembering to write them down.

So today I wish the happiest birthday to my own dear Little Man. Thank you for five amazing and happy years. I can’t wait to see what this next year brings to you!

Randomness

  • Thanks for all the kind words about the baby! We are pretty thrilled around here, and it’s fun to finally get to share the news with all of you. Baby knits update to start soon. Anyone got a favorite?
  • Knittybaby is hereby promoted to Knittykid. You all had such great suggestions; I really loved them all. I was tempted a lot by Knittytot, but I figured Knittykid would last longer. And who knows what other version may reappear with our little Three?
  • I hosted my first ever kid birthday party today for Little Man. (His real birthday is not for a few more days). I kept it seriously low key, a few friends, a few games, cake and just hanging out. All in all it was a fun morning and it wasn’t as crazy as I thought it would be. A few moments: “No, this is a party…you can’t kick most of your friends out of the room. I think you can all build legos together…”But otherwise it was all good. And this cake? Seriously, wow, wow, wow….
  • My Qiviuk Webs Tam (not made in qiviuk) made the pattern page on Ravelry (third one down). I feel like such a knitter.
  • I’m obsessing over all the blankets at January One. Specifically how on earth anyone can afford to make that many blankets in STR. I looked up how much it would cost me and decided I should probably plan on sending my kids to college instead. At least the first semester, since that’s what one blanket would cost me. (Yeah, I know, I’m delusional about tuition).
  • This sweater looks innocent enough:

Great contest entries so far, keep ’em coming! Remember, you get to pick the fabric, and I’ve got a lot to choose from! Link is on the sidebar…

I Have a Secret

So I’ve been keeping a secret from all of you. A big secret. A secret that will explain the sloppy knitting, the lack of knitting, the fewer and fewer blog posts, my inability to even manage to comment on all the blogs I barely can manage to keep up with these days…

“What secret?” you all ask. “What could possibly keep a person from knitting?!”

I’ll give you a hint.

Picture 002

I inherited these vintage patterns from the Skeptic’s great aunt. Got any ideas yet?

Still not sure? Here’s another….

Okay, maybe this one will really clue you in….

13 weeks

Got it now? If you guessed that there will be a new addition to our family, you are right!! 🙂 Exciting news for us,  baby number three is on his/her way!!!

This has been the most brutal first trimester I’ve ever been through. Sick to my stomach 24 hours a day and exhausted (two little boys have helped with that.) Seriously, picking up knitting needles was too much work, they seemed so darn heavy. Plus I pretty much fell asleep with the boys each night and there was no waking me up. The last two weeks I’ve started to feel more like myself and I actually should have some FO’s to show off soon, or at least some WIP’s.

I love the second trimester, it’s the time to get stuff done and have some energy to do it. Of course, my list is laughable, it’s so long, and I know completely impossible. But dreaming about baby knitting? So gratifying!

Happy Birthday Knittybaby!!

Are you all ready for this? My baby turns two, yes TWO today!!!

Picture 008

I’m constantly amazed lately that this tiny little boy is now really, truly a little boy. A little boy who can climb, jump, wrestle, dance, talk, sing, color, and even sass his mama or give his big brother a smack. He is an amazing blessing, and is truly the most joyful, happy little person to be around.

Messed Up Wheel

I love this age, despite the “It’s mine!” and the “I want that!” that I hear twenty times a day, there is something very special about this transition to two. It’s that absolute cuteness in everything they say, or try to say; that realization that they can really communicate with you, even when you can’t always figure out what they are saying. (“Cresens, cresens, I want cresens!!!!” Lord, I wish I knew what that meant.) The things they say are so, so funny and so incredibly sweet. I wish I could hold on to these first sentences forever.

This birthday of course, this little baby turning into a little boy right before my eyes, brings into question the longevity of his nickname. When he was born he was this tiny little guy who would of course, be a baby forever, right? If I was Knittymama, well, he should be Knittybaby, it just fit. But now I’m wondering how much longer until it’s time to move him up to a more “big boy” nickname, but I just can’t think of one that seems to fit him perfectly. Any ideas?

This birthday also opens up contest time here at Knittymama. We’ve got four birthdays coming up in the next four weeks, so it’s time to celebrate!!! I’ll announce the contest on Monday sometime. I’ll also have another big surprise coming midweek.

For everyone that is celebrating Easter this weekend, I hope it is a blessed and happy one for you and that it truly feels like spring. Personally, I’m just hoping that we’re not going to an Easter egg hunt on Saturday in 6 inches of snow. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

When it’s clean,

Picture 011

and sunny,

my workroom is my favorite place…

Picture 012

It’ cozy, has a great view,

and places for my favorite little people to come inside and do their own projects.

Sometimes, they get their projects mixed up with mine.

But it all seems to work out in the end.

It took me a long time to get this place back into a somewhat manageable space. After Christmas it was such a mess I could barely stand to go in there. But spring is my favorite time of year to get things organized and put together, and as of today, it still looks pretty tidy and workable up there.

Weekends are always an interesting blend of the boys coming up and down all afternoon. The Skeptic has his shop in the basement and I’m on the second floor. I’d love for us to have work spaces together, but wood and electronics just don’t mix well with fiber and fabric.

The boys pop in and out all day. Sometimes the Skeptic takes them out for awhile so I can work in peace, sometimes I take them out for awhile so he can work in peace. In the end everyone gets some family time together and some Mommy or Daddy time alone. And it’s funny, as much as I love my quiet time, I also love hearing the car door slam, looking out the window and seeing the boys trot up to the back door with Dad.

I feel so lucky to have a space like this right now. On a gloomy, busy Tuesday it’s a nice thought to look forward too, especially now that I know there will be more days to open up the windows, sit in the sun and work.

Seriously… (a PG-13 post)

How do you get a 22 month old to stop saying dammit?

It was frighteningly cute at first, considering he actually used it appropriately. But now he uses it all the time. Whenever soemthing does not quite happen as he wants, he lets out this little, “dam-mit” under his breath. No screaming, no shouting,  he just says it to himself. He also says “you poopie” when he’s mad, but at least that’s something an almost-two-year-old normally says.

Our tactics of “that’s not a nice word” just result in a whole string of dammits, so we’re just trying the ignore it method. I’ll let you know how it works. I’m just praying he stops before our next visit to the in-laws.

Today seemed to be a day of cursing for me, which I’m not sure why. It was a lovely day. We made apple pie and pretended to be vikings. Little Man was very big-brotherly and sweet all day. But there were moments, both involving  food where food should not be.  I let an “aw shit” out, to which Little Man decided to echo me, shaking his head at Knittybaby. And then I let an f-bomb slide under my breath while cleaning up another mess, thinking I was alone. But you’re never alone as a mom, and my little cursing baby was right behind me, repeating me loud and clear.

Honestly, I’m not that foul mouthed of a person. This is a slightly embarrassing post to write. I have cleaned up my vocabulary quite a bit since my college years, but there seems to be something about a foody mess that brings out my worst words. I admire the moms who seem to be able to immediately change everything to “rats” and “crackers” as soon as their kids get to the repeating stage. Maybe if I start charging myself yarn for each slip up?

Finally…

It happened. We were allowed to sleep for an extra blissful 30 minutes.

Usually our Saturday and Sunday mornings are not as relaxing. We are hounded from the minute the sun is up, sometimes before.

“It’s morning!!! Get up!!! Why won’t you get up?!!!” Boys climbing over us, gleeful, jumping, bouncing, an elbow in the stomach, a foot in the face. “PLEASE!!!!! Get up!!!!”

Then the agreement to leave the big bed to “go play quietly.” But only to be interrupted with “Mom!”, “Stop it!”, “You broke it!” and Knittybaby wailing, the Skeptic and I arguing over who’s turn it is to go make peace, hoping that maybe we can get another ten minutes before we give in and get out of bed.

That is a usual weekend morning in our house.

But today! Today a small miracle happened. They woke up. They got up right away and played peacefully, quietly for 30 minutes. We dozed, listening to playful chatter, the building of train tracks, Little Man saying, “Sorry, are you okay? It was just a little bump…” Happy playing, actual teamwork. And then….they made us breakfast.

You’re worried about the breakfast, aren’t you? You’re seeing disaster here, right? But  even this went well. “A special surprise for you!” Cereal for all four of us, spoons at each place, not a drop of milk spilled. Although I think each bowl had about a cup and a half of milk in in, but hey…it was part of the charm.

Now we don’t expect this to start happening every weekend morning. I’m sure next weekend we’ll be back to the usual. But, the potential is there, I’ve seen the future, and it actually involves rest….

The best plans, but…..

The workshop was in full force last night. The saws in the basement were buzzing and the sewing machine was humming. Carols were playing and we were on schedule.

Then Knittybaby woke up. And puked. And puked some more. And kept on puking. The  little guy is sitting on my lap right now, probably getting ready to puke. I’m really not sure which is worse, seeing my poor baby so sick and confused, (because really, how scary must it be to puke when you’re that little?) or, cleaning him and everything up after each time he gets sick. OK, seeing him sick is the worst but the mess is a close second.

Keep your fingers crossed that this passes quickly and that the rest of us don’t get it too. The word around Minneapolis is that this one lasts for days. Christmas is so close. I can handle a slight change of plans, a gift or two that isn’t finished, but puking? On Christmas? Uh-uh.

Sorry for the incredible lack of handmade goodness on this blog lately. I promise, a major show and tell really is coming!

Come On, Get Happy

Wow, a week since my last post. That’s what happens when you go home from work with a sinus infection and forget your laptop there. Seriously, the pain was so bad I could barely drive home on Monday. Anyone have success in dealing with chronic sinus issues? I’m getting so tired of these flare ups.

So what’s happened while I was suffering all week? Growth, for one. I’m always amazed when my kids hit a new spurt. This time it’s all about the words.

Knittybaby is talking, and talking, and talking. All day long I hear:

“I do! ”

“Happening?”

“CD! CD!”

“Why?”

“Crackers!”

Of course, the knowledge that he can now really communicate makes it even more frustrating for him when he tries but we don’t get it. When I can’t decipher his babyspeak I’m met with massive screaming, pushing and “No!” every time I make a suggestion as to what he is talking about. Frustrating at times, exciting to see, and even a bit weird occasionally when he surprises me with what he says and understands. I keep thinking, “this is my baby, he’s not supposed to do that yet, is he?” But he does. Every day I think how incredible it really is.

Little Man has his head exploding with letters. Suddenly he’s realized that these letters make sounds, and sounds make words, and if he can figure it all out he’ll be able to read. It’s an amazing process to watch, and I’m so happy that he has come to this on his own interests rather than being pushed into it before he was ready.

He’s got about ten random letters figured out, and he spends his day asking me what this words is, and that letter, and this sound, trying so hard to spell something other than his name. I’m loving all this growth and I’m so excited to see how thrilled he is about all of this.

I also feel like my head might explode a bit, when I’ve got one kid yelling “Mimi! mimi! mimi” and another one yelling, “Mom, now what does it spell?” (“Rxbdft!!! Almost the same as rxbtt!” We need to work on some vowels.) All with a very sweet beagle under my feet while I’m cooking dinner with a sinus infection. But still fun most of the time!

Little Man also decided to restyle his hair this week. For the last two weeks he’s been asking me to cut it, “Short on the top and sides and long in the back.”

“No, that’s a mullet. That is the only haircut I won’t let you have.”

“But I LIKE mullets!!”

Before you get too afraid, he did not give himself a mullet. He did however cut his hair in a way that makes him look like David Cassidy in the Partridge Family years. I’ve got to take him in now to have it fixed, and I’m trying to decide if I let him keep his Cassidy look or opt for something a little more trimmed, but still with his shaggy boy hair that I love so much.

My artist

He still looks a lot like the above picture, only with a feathered look. Hmmmm…..

And just to show her off a bit, here is a pic of Bailey. She is ALL beagle, but we’re loving her. As you can tell, she is a very serious girl!

Where’s that kid who keeps dropping his food?

I’m Better Than A Sweater

Little Man has had the kind of week where he just needed a lot of extra cuddles and love. He’s pretty much been glued to me, to the point that he even cried when I went to knitting on Tuesday. I can’t remember the last time when he cried when I left the house. So it’s been a lot of snuggles this week, reading books, doing puzzles, a lot of general togetherness.

Tonight during supper, as he slid his dining room chair as close to mine as possible, I commented, “You’ve really needed a lot of extra Mommy time this week, haven’t you?” He nodded and dove into his sandwich.

Later, when I was getting the boys ready for bed, Little Man  picked out his books and crawled into bed and said,  “You know why I need extra Mommy time this week?”

“Why’s that?” I replied.

“It’s because you’re so warm. And it’s really cold now.”

Must be all that wool I’m wearing.
The beagle, as I’m sure you’re all wondering, is coming to live with us!

She was a stray we found last weekend, who stayed with us until the vet’s office opened on Monday and we were able to find her people from her rabies tag info. She is the sweetest girl ever, and ironically, her family was in the process of looking for a new home for her as she escaped this weekend for her little neighborhood jaunt. They have another baby coming  and feel they can’t give her the attention she deserves.

I had hoped my parents would take her. My Mom said yes but my Dad is not quite sold on the idea. The Skeptic at first said “no way” when I brought up the idea of us keeping her if my parents couldn’t. But, he’s a softie, and when he came home from work today he told us all, “I have good news. Bailey the beagle has found a new home… with us!”

So we now have two dogs, two cats, and two kids. Wish us luck:-)
